From 2000 – 2021, it was my privilege to teach music composition and theory for the School of Music and Theatre at Heidelberg University. There are several fine degree opportunities for potential music majors, including young composers.

The Heidelberg Advantage: Even though Heidelberg does not currently offer a professional composition degree, there are numerous opportunities for gaining experience through anactive composition studio that is open to majors and non-majors. 

 

• Composition students at Heidelberg enjoy the experience and support of faculty members, who have performed their compositions. They also answer questions regarding writing for their performance area.

• Student ensembles and theatre productions offer young composers special opportunities to create new music on the campus

• CompositionStudents receive weekly private  or group lessons; they also work with their peers in composition seminars, in order to learn about the larger world of contemporary composition

• Contact with guest composers and performers on campus enrich a student’s understanding of music and the many ways that contemporary composers may choose to express their ideas.

• Additional field trips to contemporary music festivals and other regional concerts to hear live performances of new music
